The works of Arthur Esam have enjoyed enduring popularity since his arrival in Australia in 1870. His vivid depictions of the events of his time continue to resonate with audiences today. Known for his topical, never pretentious style, Esam often infused his work with a subtle sense of humour.
Though primarily recognized as a ...
prolific illustrator, Esam also worked in various other fields, including droving, surveying, and exploration with the Lands Department of South Australia. He arrived in Western Australia in 1896, where he served as the company secretary for the Kalgoorlie Brewing and Ice Company.
In addition, he successfully applied for and was granted a Gallon Licence for his premises on Brookman Road in Kalgoorlie. Gallon Licence stores were the precursors to today’s liquor stores. Esam later joined the staff of the Kalgoorlie Miner newspaper before relocating to Melbourne in 1907.
His works are held in the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery, as well as in numerous private collections across Australia.
