Exhibited: The Art Gallery of Western Australia, "George Haynes Survey Exhibition" 17th October, 1988.
George Haynes, a devoted artist committed to the meticulous craft of painting, embarked on a distinctive journey marked by continuous growth and learning. The belated recognition of his work has proven advantageous, affording him the invaluable opportunity to delve deeper into the intricacies of artistic expression. ...
“It’s a good thing that popularity didn’t come early – because I wouldn’t know as much about painting as I do today.”
“Inside Outside - Down on the Farm” is an image that reflects Haynes’ experience and his readiness to experiment. The dominant colours are red and blue—elements that demand immediate attention. Scattered throughout the composition, in key positions, are complementary colours in complementary tones. The green is as cool as the red is hot; the orange is as warm as the blue is cool. The same dynamic applies to the tertiary colours—each is complemented by its polar opposite. These opposites unite to create a work that, despite its contrasts, remains in perfect balance.
This balance is mirrored in the figure seated on the stool, leaning forward. The interplay of light, shade, and angles invoked by the pose offers the opportunity to use additional colour, while also camouflaging the subject.
This work is a feast for the eyes and the senses, completely original. In his unique manner, Haynes has made the complicated appear simple.
